If you use starty-stoppies (leaders-enders, jumpers, or whatever you like to call them) to begin and end your machine stitching, you should save them and make stuff! If you don't use starty-stoppies when you are sewing, you can make these wallets using scraps instead. Fold the scraps double so that you'll have more raw edges for texture.

I have one for folding money and a second one for business cards, credit cards, driver's license, etc. People often comment about my wallet, they make fun gifts, and they are good for using fabric leftovers. I also made a purse that was covered with starty-stoppies, but that's another story!

You'll need:

Base fabric, which is also the lining: 7” x 5”

Fabric for pockets:
Cut 2 small pockets, measuring 5” x 4.5” (fold to 5” x 2.25”, wrong sides together, and press)
Cut 2 large pockets, measuring 5” x 6” (fold to 5” x 3”, wrong sides together, and press)

Lightweight, fusible interfacing such as Pellon #931TD:
Cut one for base fabric, 7" x 5"
Cut 2 for small pockets, 5” x 2.25”
Cut 2 for large pockets, 5” x 3”

And, of course, a pile of starty-stoppies, or scraps that are folded double.

Instructions:

Fuse the 7" x 5" interfacing to the wrong side of the base fabric. Arrange the starty-stoppies on the interfaced side of the base fabric with at least 1/2" extending beyond the edge of the base fabric, as pictured in the first photo below. Overlap them a little to fully cover the interfacing and stitch them on, adding pieces as you go (the bobbin thread will show on the inside of your wallet, so choose a thread color that you like). I usually stitch in a grid pattern, which you can see in the second photo. Sometimes I have to add additional lines of stitching if I see that I didn't catch the edges of the starty-stoppies well enough. The stitching is pretty random and I don't plan it, I just start sewing and catch all the edges of the little pieces. After the interfaced side of the base fabric is fully covered, turn it over and trim the edges of the exposed starty-stoppies to 1/2" beyond the edge of the base fabric (see the third photo).
Her house is the Mary Poppins carpetbag of houses. Where has she been keeping all of this? Does she have a secret basement? I've posted many photos on Facebook of things my mother has given away in recent years. Here are this week's treasures, which will now go into MY collections. I will actually use the needles, so that is how I justify accepting those. The bone crochet hook just appeals to me, although I don't crochet. The buttons on the cards, well, I remember when my mother and I went through a phase of buying discontinued buttons at Hancock's on Webb Chapel in Dallas during the sixties. I think they were $.10 per card. There are plenty of those still in my own stash, but many of them were used back in the day when I was actually sewing clothes (imagine!).
Several of my friends are as busy as I am, trying to start, I mean FINISH our quilts. The best motivation is a looming deadline, and this one is hanging heavily over my head. But I'm making progress!

Here are a few photos of my WIP (work in progress) as we quilters call it. I painted a background with Pebeo Setacolors, heat set it and then ironed on hundreds (thousands?) of die-cut freezer paper circles. Tomorrow or the next day I will spray on additional layers of color, and those circles will serve as a resist, leaving the color beneath untouched. I hope. Oh, please...

I'll be posting updates soon!
I got a stiff neck while ironing those circles on when the board was standing up, so I finally wised up and put it on a table. Still, after a few hundred circles last night, I was tired with a capital T!
My talented friend Robin Williamson just got my new web site up and running a couple of days ago and she did such a fabulous job! Check it out: http://www.ocaroldesigns.com. And, by golly, I'm going to start posting again on my blog to celebrate! I think I might, ahem, have said that a time or two before, but this time I mean it.

Tonight Mike and I drove to Weatherford so that we could go to the Quilters Guild of Parker County. I wanted to see Bonnie Hunter's (quiltville.com) program and I also wanted to give her a set of my new Hexactagon templates since she loves hexies so much. While I was listening to her, I pieced a block myself.
I can understand how quilters get hooked on these.
Why is it that when you are making a lot of something, and try to
keep count of how many you have made as you go, it's just not
possible to remember if you just said "89" to yourself or if it was
"90"? I need to make 108 of something and I've counted the
pieces in progress about eight times (or was it nine?).

The fountain in the tiny pond near the feeders was frozen, so I poured some hot water on it to get the water going and melt some of the ice so the birds could get a drink.

There was heavy traffic at the feeders yesterday and quite a variety of birds. They are very busy this morning looking for the seed, which is covered by last night's snow, so I'll go out and uncover it and fill the hanging feeder. I don't know how many hours I spent standing at the window watching them yesterday. It was impossible to walk by and not stop to look.
So much that they are overwhelmed by it all. Hmmm, I'm sounding like a...grandma, which I am. I'll bet my own grandparents said the same thing when my cousins and I were little. My maternal grandparents gave each of us cousins a paper sack with an orange, an apple, some nuts and candy and $1.00. But that was when a dollar would buy five gallons of gas! My paternal grandparents were more indulgent, as I was an only grandchild on that side for a long time. Dolls--I still have Daisy--and other toys, until I began reading, and then every year I received a subscription to National Geographic. I loved every issue. Anyway, this year we got simple gifts for the six grandkids and grandniece and nephew, but I made everyone a pillowcase and put them on pillows. Here are five of the eight that I made. They loved them! I think I'll do this every year.
This little guy didn't seem the least bit afraid to pose on my finger. I found him climbing on a sunflower in the back yard. What a cutie! On Saturday and Sunday of last week, we had a two-day workshop. Everyone brought their drawing or photo and I helped them with construction techniques and design decisions. Getting started is definitely the hardest part. It's so much fun to see all the different subjects that people select for their quilts.

I tried to find instructions for a tiny tree like this but the only one I found was about 10-12 inches tall and took about 24 chenille stems. The assembly was awkward, too, so I decided to try to make my own version. This tree measures about 4 1/2" with the stand.

Supplies: Needle-nose pliers, wire snippers, eight chenille stems, ruler.

1. Fold one chenille stem in half, wrapping it around the tip of the needle-nose pliers to form a tiny loop at the middle (in case you want to hang the tree on a tree). Make a couple of twists. This is the "trunk."

3. Hold the trunk with the two loose ends up and place the "X" over the two chenille stems. Push the "X" snugly toward the top and hold it there while you twist the stems one time.

4. Cut two 1 1/2" pieces of chenille stem. Hold in an "X" shape and make a half twist. As you did in step 3, place the "X" between the two stems of the trunk, then twist the trunk tightly once or twice.

5. Cut three 2" pieces and six 1" pieces of chenille stem. Twist a 1" piece about 1/2" from both ends of each 2" piece. Pinch the twisted spot with the needle-nose pliers to secure. Hold all three of the completed 2" pieces together so that they cross at the middle (looks like a snowflake). Hold with both hands (three pieces in one hand, three in the other) and make a half twist . Place over the two stems of the trunk as before, and twist the trunk stems twice.
The tree stand: Mike cut slices (about 5/8" thick) of large dowel rod (1 1/2" diameter) and drilled a small hole in the center. I painted them white, poured a puddle of glue onto a piece of aluminum foil, plus a pile of white glitter nearby, placed the point of a pencil in the hole and rolled the outer edges of the dowel in the glue and then in the glitter and placed it on another piece of foil to dry. After the edges dried, I put glue on the top and sprinkled more glitter on. The hole is just large enough for me to push the trunk of the tree into it, but if necessary, you could glue the tree trunk into the hole. The trunk will be a little bit too long when you finish. I usually trim it about 1".
I found it easier to arrange and bend the branches with the needle-nose pliers. If you're really obsessive, you can make teensy beaded ornaments for your tree, or how about a garland of seed beads? Fun! One last word of advice: I have used lots of different types of chenille stems. If you use the metallic, sparkly ones--they remind me of vintage aluminum trees--wear gloves while you are making them. That stuff is hard on your skin!
I have many such boxes and sometimes I go through them and sometimes I just pack them away. This particular box--a tiny one--contained the following: a rusted sewing machine needle, a two-inch long pencil, a one-inch red crayon, and two notes written by my grandmother. One of the notes is written on a small piece of an envelope postmarked 1979 and the other is on the back of a receipt dated 1986. My grandmother set the standard for recycling. The notes contain information about yardage for pillows and the number of squares needed for, presumably, a pieced quilt. These items have been sitting on my bathroom vanity for at least two weeks, and I fear I can't throw them away. Apparently, it IS genetic.
It's now one of my patterns (http://www.ocaroldesigns.com ), and we named it "Whooo's Your Granddaddy?". The close-up shows Jake as the baby bird in the nest, with mom and dad nearby, and on the branches are the aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents, with their relationship and name written on the leaves. We have a very non-traditional family, so this worked well because you can add as many birds and leaves as you want.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33621071.post-61608725385553280192009-11-12T14:26:00.000-06:002009-11-12T14:31:19.040-06:00Socks!

I like to hand-dye socks and sometimes I give them to my friends just for fun. By the time I think about it, the flower buds are already forming. I couldn't bear to throw away this old wicker chair that is rotten, so I put it in the flower bed, just below the little rock wall where the asters grow. I just love the way they look growing through the chair. It's always exciting to see all the vendors with their new merchandise. It just sets your head to spinning! The creativity is contagious, I'm sure. This year's IQA show is amazing, as always. I was excited and humbled to have two of my quilts in the show. Here I am with my Iguana. I do love those Tsukineko inks that I used to paint him. The other quilt that is in the show is my Carrot Farm--a very different look than the Iguana.
